Cedillo to Introduce TPS Resolution in Support of Immigrants

Los Angeles – With Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan declaring his intent to retaliate against California for passing legislation to protect immigrants, immigrant workers will rally with Councilmember Gil Cedillo Friday at the forecourt of Los Angeles City Hall to express solidarity with Temporary Protective Status (TPS) beneficiaries who are likely to be the next targets of this persecution.

Workers who are among about 300,000 TPS holders in the nation will speak out about the contributions they have made to Los Angeles’ communities and economy thanks to the legal status that Congress conferred on immigrants from countries ravaged by war and natural disaster.

After Governor Brown’s signing of SB 54 and AB 450 to protect immigrants against ICE overreach, the next step is for the Los Angeles City Council to pass a resolution urging extension of crucial TPS status and a path to legal residency for people who fulfilled every requirement of this program for years and decades. TPS is set to expire in the coming months for thousands of people from 11 countries, including El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti. After following all the rules, these members of our community should not face federal prosecution.

Members of SEIU-USWW, SEIU 2015, SEIU 1000, Haitian Bridge, Clinica Romero, the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) and the National Day Labor Organizing Network (NDLON) will join Councilmember Cedillo in urging the Los Angeles City Council’s support of the resolution.
