Cedillo Introduces Motion Supporting H.R. 3440
The 2017 Dream Act with a path to permanent residency for DACA recipients

Los Angeles—On the 5th anniversary of the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), Councilmember Cedillo introduced a resolution in support of House Resolution 3440, by Congresswomen Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-California), referred to as the 2017 Dream Act.

“On the fifth year of the highly successful DACA program, it is only right that we start looking at the next step for these new Americans who seek a better life for themselves and their families,” stated Councilmember Cedillo.

“H.R. 3440 in the House and S. 1615 in the Senate, do just that. The 2017 Dream Act outlines a clear path to permanent residency, and eventually citizenship, for those who have done what is required of them to become a part of the fabric of our society. When given the opportunity, DACA recipients have proven time and time again to be resilient and contributory in every aspect of our society. Brought here by no fault of their own, let us acknowledge and empower those who have known no other county other than America as their home,” stated Cedillo.

Approximately 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children, are recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), granting them temporary protection from deportation and legal work authorization for a renewable period of two years.

The passage of the 2017 Dream Act is the best way to guarantee DACA recipients have permanent protection from deportation and a permanent solution to their immigration status, regardless of the political climate in Washington D.C.

Councilmember Gil Cedillo currently represents the 1st Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Glassell Park, Cypress Park, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Solano Canyon, Sycamore Grove, Elysian Park, Echo Park, Westlake, Angelino Heights, Temple Beaudry, Lafayette Park, Chinatown, Forgotten Edge, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Pico Union, Adams-Normandie, University Park, Mid Cities and Mac Arthur Park.
