Cedillo/Wesson Co-Introduce City of Sanctuary Resolution

Los Angeles—Councilmembers Cedillo and Wesson co-introduced a resolution today, declaring Los Angeles a City of Sanctuary. At the Immigrant Affairs, Civil Rights, and Equity Committee yesterday, the City’s Immigrant Advocate Peter Schey outlined a strategy to protect Dreamers, in light of President Trump’s recent announcement to abolish the DACA program. He advised that President Trump's penalties to punish Sanctuary Cities has no basis in law and is meant only to intimidate local officials.

“The President’s decision to end DACA, leaves many Angelenos without legal status, and vulnerable to deportation. We chose to declare the Los Angeles as a City of Sanctuary to give Angelenos reassurance that we are with them,” stated Councilmember Cedillo. “This is the City of Angels, who should all be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve,” added Cedillo.

"There are many issues where compromise is necessary. Human rights is not one of those issues," said City Council President Herb Wesson. "Los Angeles will continue to be the tip of the spear when it comes to immigration and protecting the residents of our city," he added.

The City of Sanctuary resolution will go through the committee process and immediately follow to the council floor for consideration. A motion will follow, incorporating recommendations made by the Immigrant Advocate Peter Schey, to further protect Dreamers and other immigrant populations in Los Angeles.

Councilmember Gil Cedillo currently represents the 1st Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Glassell Park, Cypress Park, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Solano Canyon, Sycamore Grove, Elysian Park, Echo Park, Westlake, Angelino Heights, Temple Beaudry, Lafayette Park, Chinatown, Forgotten Edge, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Pico Union, Adams-Normandie, University Park, Mid Cities and Mac Arthur Park.
