Cedillo to Honor Slain Gay Man in NELA
And the creation of the Uptown Gay and Lesbian Alliance (UGLA)

Los Angeles–Councilmember Cedillo will dedicate the corner of Avenue 41 and N. Figueroa Street as the ‘Bobby Brown and Uptown Gay and Lesbian Alliance Square,’ honoring the life of Bobby Brown, a gay man that was slain in that very spot, giving life to the UGLA organization.

In 1983, Bobby Brown was shot and killed outside a gay bar in Highland Park. Bobby Brown, 24, a well-known young gay man, was twice assaulted and finally killed the evening of Wednesday, March 31, 1983, as he was leaving the local gay bar, The Bon Mot, at Avenue 41 and North Figueroa Street. This attack represented the second murder in the gay community within two years. The first murder victim was Richard Lee, who was assaulted and killed at the corner of Avenue 43 and North Figueroa on November 14, 1981.

After renewed efforts to find the assailant – Thomas Adam Cabuto – LAPD finally arrested Cabuto, who was sentenced to 36 years to life. Just recently, Captain Sandoval alerted UGLA about a parole hearing for Cabuto. UGLA has re-submitted a letter requesting parole be revoked/denied.
