PRESS RELEASE
Cedillo Welcomes Romulo Avelica Back to LA
Honors his family for Latino Heritage Month

Los Angeles—Councilmember Cedillo welcomed CD1 resident and ICE detainee turned advocate, Romulo Avelica Gonzalez, back to Los Angeles, after a five month deportation proceeding battle. Avelica joined California Community Foundation President and CEO Antonia Hernandez, and community activist Soledad ‘Chole’ Alatorre, as Latino Heritage Month 2017 honorees. Latino Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) is a time when Latinos honor their spirit of self-determination, dignity, and respect for cultural heritage.

“In light of the negative rhetoric that started on the campaign trail and has made its way to the White House, we must take every opportunity to fight the anti-immigrant hysteria by celebrating real life successes stories,” stated Councilmember Gil Cedillo.

“Today we honored three individuals that have made significant contributions to the Latino community. This is how we RESIST the Trump administration, we celebrate the successes of our community to eclipse the rhetoric from the far right,” he added.

“I want to thank the community for standing by my side through this ordeal, and Councilmember Gil Cedillo for throwing the weight of the City behind me. We must organize and come together like we did for my case, for the countless other cases out there that need the same attention. We are united more than ever and ready to help others,” stated Romulo Avelica Gonzalez.
