WHY: Councilmember Cedillo and the Department of Recreation and Parks will dedicate a new playground at Montecito Heights Recreation Center and kick off the 2016 Summer Night Lights program.

Located in Montecito Heights, the 22.53 acre park includes an array of recreational activities such as ball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, a gymnasium building, and a picnic area for family fun that serves nearly 2,400 residents living within a one-half mile walking distance of the park. The newly renovated state of the art playground features play equipment with shade structures and two expression swings that promote intergenerational play with adults and children swinging together. The new play area includes the first IONiX™ play system in the City of Los Angeles which is an outdoor art form that promotes active and imaginative play with translucent panels at the top that capture light from the sun and reflect colorful hues providing sensory integration for children of all abilities.

In addition to dedicating the new playground, this event will also kick off the 2016 Summer Night Lights program. Summer Night Lights is a youth development program that the Department offers to assist the City in meeting challenges related to reducing gang activity in Gang Reduction and Youth Development Zones. The program operates at 32 locations across the City of Los Angeles and keeps recreation centers and parks open between the hours of 7 p.m.-11 p.m. throughout the summer months.
