Continues to Improve Public Safety in the Highland Park Area

Los Angeles—Councilmember Cedillo installed a full traffic signal on north Figueroa Street and Avenue 51. North Figueroa has been identified as a High Injury Network (HIN) street, which according to LADOT data, has a high concentration of traffic collisions resulting in severe injuries. In support of the Mayor’s Vision Zero Initiative, which brings together transportation engineers, police officers, advocates, and policymakers to work towards creating safer streets, this is the latest safety improvement at the request Councilmember Cedillo.

Since taking office, Councilmember Cedillo has partnered with LADOT to implement the following public safety improvements along North Figueroa:
• Increased the amount of time for pedestrians to cross on crosswalks (to 21 seconds) along Figueroa from Avenue 50 - Avenue 60.
• Placed a full traffic signal on Avenue 55 and Figueroa.
• Placed a full traffic signal on Avenue 51 and Figueroa.
• Secured funding for rectangular rapid crosswalk beacons on Avenue 60, Avenue 35 and Avenue 41 and Eagle Rock Blvd.

“We have made public safety a top priority in Council District 1,” stated Councilmember Cedillo. “Working with LADOT and other City departments, we have been able to fast track these life saving measures to make the Figueroa corridor safer for all. We recognize the challenges on this busy thoroughfare and have made a series of improvements to better the quality of life of those who live and work in Highland Park,” added Cedillo.

“I set a goal to eliminate traffic fatalities in our city by 2025, because I believe Angelenos have the ingenuity, will, and spirit of partnership to make all of our streets safe for everyone,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Installing a full traffic signal along North Figueroa moves us one step closer to the future we are working toward.”
